Can France Overcome Their Shocking Defeat?

Superstar Kylian Mbappé made his much-anticipated return to the French national team, but Les Bleus suffered a stunning 2-0 defeat against Croatia in the first leg of the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals. The match, held at Poljud Stadium in Split on March 21 (KST), saw France struggle to break down a disciplined Croatian side, leaving them in a precarious position ahead of the second leg.

Mbappé’s Return Falls Short of Expectations

This match marked Mbappé’s first appearance for the national team in six months, but his impact was far from what fans had hoped for. Playing the full 90 minutes, the Paris Saint-Germain forward was unable to find his usual spark. He attempted four dribbles but succeeded only once and frequently lost possession in duels against Croatian defenders. Despite being France’s key attacking threat, he failed to register a goal or create significant chances.

Mbappé’s return to the national team was already under scrutiny due to past controversies. In October last year, he withdrew from international duty citing injury but continued to play for his club, sparking criticism. His reputation took another hit when reports surfaced about his visit to a nightclub during the same period. Additionally, he was accused of sexual assault at a hotel in Sweden but was later cleared due to lack of evidence. Given these circumstances, his underwhelming performance against Croatia only amplified the disappointment surrounding his comeback.

France’s Tactical Struggles Despite Dominance

France dominated possession with 63%, controlling the tempo for much of the game. However, Didier Deschamps' side lacked cutting edge in the final third. The midfield maintained steady circulation of the ball, but there was little penetration or creativity to unlock Croatia’s disciplined defense. Mbappé and the rest of the attacking unit struggled with movement and finishing, failing to capitalize on their territorial dominance.

Meanwhile, Croatia executed a near-perfect counter-attacking strategy. In the 26th minute, Ante Budimir met a pinpoint cross from the left wing and powered a header past the helpless French goalkeeper to open the scoring. Just before halftime, veteran Ivan Perišić doubled the lead with a stunning right-footed volley inside the penalty area, effectively sealing the game.

A Must-Win Second Leg for France

With this defeat, France now faces a do-or-die situation in the second leg at Stade de France on March 24. Only a victory will keep their hopes of reaching the semifinals alive. The pressure is mounting on Deschamps to find solutions, particularly in attack, where France failed to create clear-cut opportunities despite their territorial dominance.

In other quarterfinal action, Germany secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Italy, thanks to Joshua Kimmich’s playmaking brilliance. Italy took an early lead in the 9th minute through Sandro Tonali, but Germany responded in the second half. Kimmich provided two key assists, setting up goals for Kleindienst and Goretzka to complete the turnaround.

Spain, meanwhile, salvaged a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in thrilling fashion. Mikel Merino scored a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time, extending Spain’s unbeaten streak in international matches to 17 games.

Denmark also grabbed a crucial win, edging Portugal 1-0 at home thanks to a decisive goal from Rasmus Højlund. The result puts Denmark in a strong position heading into the second leg.

Can France Bounce Back?

With their Nations League hopes hanging by a thread, all eyes will be on Mbappé and his teammates in the second leg. Can Les Bleus respond to adversity and turn the tie around, or will their campaign end in disappointment? The answer will be revealed at Stade de France.
